What is embodiment, anyway?

Writer: Jaime EhrenbergJaime Ehrenberg

The word embodiment has been around for a long time but has been more heavily used in the last 5 to 7 years. I have noticed this increase especially as technology has quickened and access to all things online has increased. Which begs the question: just what is embodiment?

Embodiment, to me, is the ability to connect with the wisdom of your body. It’s honestly that simple. There are many ways to do this, but the important thing is to move your awareness from the mind to the physical body. This is challenging in times when our mental capacities are used so much every day. No matter what your occupation is, you’re using your mind heavily throughout your week. For those who work on a computer there are likely many days when you are so disassociated from your body that you don’t stop to eat, drink or go to the restroom because your mind is so focused on the tasks at hand. I say none of this to make you feel like you’ve been doing things all wrong. We’re simply in a day and age where the mind has been overvalued and we’ve adapted to that as a species.

The mind, however, is limited in its wisdom capacity. A mind-body connection of intelligence and awareness is important, and I would argue that a body-mind connection is even more important. What is your body telling you? How do you feel its wisdom? Do you know how?

This is where embodiment exercises come in. As a way of introducing new, different or forgotten ways of listening to your body. In my upcoming workshop, I will be facilitating different types of movement exercises to support different ways of connecting with your body. There is much more than movement to embodiment, but it is a very good access point. If you’re curious, I’d love to see you on June 22nd, or at future offerings that support embodiment.
